Day 13 - Friday, June 13 - Lake of the Woods, Kenora, Ontario

OMG it's Friday the 13th. We have now entered Ontario and on our way to Kenora, ON.  The roads are better here so far. The terrain is more hilly and there are lots of trees and lakes.  Very pretty drive so far.  It's a beautiful day today, skies are clear and the sun is shining.  We entered Kenora and it is situated on the Lake of The Woods.  Beautiful - reminds us of home.  We stopped at the Lake of the Woods Discovery centre / Tourist Information.  A very nice and helpful young fellow gave us maps of Kenora and Ontario and when he told us how far Niagara Falls was from there - we about fell over.  So I guess we will be spending more days here than we thought.  I think Dee-Anne's grandfarther, Dave was from here so I am looking for a t-shirt or something to take her.  He told us City Hall would have the best selection.  So off we go fully loaded with new information and a goal in mind.

Parking downtown was a bit of a challenge for the Moho and Geo, but we found some - we had to feed two meters though.  Gidget is very excited as she gets to walk the streets of Kenora.  Lots of old buildings and a quaint downtown.  The City Hall is about 6 or 7 blocks so we had a decent walk and the weather was gorgeous.  There was even a doggie water dish, complete with poop bags in front of one of the stores.  Friendly little place.  Task accomplished we head out to look for fuel, coffee at Timmies and fishing license as we hope to do some fishing from shore.

Well one good reason to come to Ontario to fish is that if you are a Canadian Senior Citizen you do not need a licence!  How Awesome is that!!!  So we bought worms and hope the weather holds and we find a fishing hole.

Along the way the scenery is gorgeous.  We pulled into a rest area by Island Lake and took these pictures.  This could be any one of the lakes in BC's Interior.  Clear water, fish jumping and rugged shoreline.  Dan walked out onto a stone eddy and said he could see lots of small fish.  Gidget enjoyed her stop there too.

We entered Dryden about  4:00 and started to look for fuel and a campsite.  The co-ops seems to be the cheapest in most towns and it was $1.349 so we topped up, you never know where the next one will be.  Down the road we went to find a campsite - not much around.

So we decided to go to a bar and watch the hockey game - one of the locals said the best place to watch would be the B&B Roadhouse Bar at the Best Western Hotel.  So we decided to get supper there and take in the hockey game.  We parked in the back of the hotel and off we went.  We finally left when it went into overtime.  During the evening we noticed all these groups of men coming in - they were fishermen from various states, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan.  The bar keep told us they come regularly for fishing trips.  It is only 3 hours to Dryden from the border.   Good for business.  There are hundreds of lakes in the area to choose from.  When we went out our Moho was surrounded by trucks and boats - so we camped in the parking lot for the night.
