Day 17 - Tuesday, June 17 - Manitoulin Island

Omg it is raining cats and dogs!  The rain started very early this morning - do you like the sound of rain tapping on the roof?  I usually do but it was pounding heavily and not so musical today.  We checked the weather ahead to Sudbury and it is the same with a chance of lightening.  Lovely if you are a duck, I guess.

So Dan is getting very techie - he installed the weather network app on his phone this morning (with a little assistance) so he could check out the weather himself.  I am proud of him, he is becoming very independent, ha.

The Mosquito story here is an ongoing saga.  They have been eating me alive for the past 10 days.  I asked Dan this morning if mosquito season was coming to an end soon and he said no it's just getting started.  Ugh! I have so many bites I am scratching constantly and they are mostly the size of quarters, and the after bite doesn't work for whatever reason.  In one place in Manitoba they were as big as large houseflies.  Maybe if it ever quits raining they will go away.

We had a great time last night - we sat around the campfire at Ralph and Mary's and there was a slight breeze so the Mosquitos weren't too bad - but that is our first campfire since we hit the road.  It was great - don't think there will be one tonight.  At least the wind is not blowing a gale - that's positive.

Sault Ste. Marie is where Lake Superior meets Lake Huron and they have a lock system similar to the Panama Canal.  The lake drops 21 feet into Lake Huron and the lock system provides safe travel for both passengers and freight.  The first lock was built in 1855.  We may have gone to see it in operation if the weather had not been so bad.

Today we have travelled 4043 km since leaving home - that's a long way.  The road this morning is in better shape than the last few hundred kms.  You would think that the Trans Canada Highway would be four lanes and in good shape - but Ralph says it has not improved over the  years.  Wow, that's a bit shameful for the #1 Highway.  The lady that owns the RV park where we stayed last night said that Toronto is in need of upgrades to the transit system - so the Ontario government is going to add a 3 cent per litre tax to all users in the province, starting in 2015 and increase the tax until it reaches 10 cents per litre.  This tax affects all parts of the province not just those driving in and around Toronto.  The Ontario government should put more money into improving roads throughout the Province!

I took this picture the other day - it shows the terrain a bit better than I can explain it.

The road looks pretty good here but it is only one lane.  And below is an example of the pavement condition, quite broken up and very rough.

But this does not show the broken pavement at the edge with a drop off to uneven gravel shoulder.

At lunch today we were looking at the map and decided to go Highway 6 turning off at McKerrow onto Manitoulin Island and then take the Chi-Cheemaun Ferry through Lake Huron to Tobermory on the mainland.  It is just a different route - more scenic maybe.  We are not sure if we will make the last ferry today, but will try.  If not, we will stay over and take the ferry tomorrow.  It's still raining!

We get to a one lane swing bridge over the North Channel with a stop light regulating traffic flow.  There is also a sign that tells you the swing bridge is closed every hour for fifteen minutes.  We just made it before 3'oclock.  This area reminds us of Vancouver Island.  Not a very good picture of the bridge as it is very overcast.

Here's a picture of the terrain of the island.

The Island is very rocky and farm like at the same time.  Many First Nations towns with various businesses and lots of native Crafts as well.  Yahoo we made it on the ferry - the last ones on.  So now we will disembark at Tobermory and look for a place to rest our bones.  We missed the town and head south on Hwy 6.  Miller Lake is on our radar and we find it.  From where we sit we are overlooking Miller Lake through the trees.  It has finally stopped raining and it is calm!!!

Actually this is not the mainland it is the Bruce Peninsula - my error.  This is a very quaint place.  Time to relax now!
