Day18 - Wednesday, June 18 - Bruce Peninsula & Wiarton Willie

We awake this morning to a misty morning - hmm think there is a song about that.  The fisherman are just getting ready to head out on the lake.  This is more a seasonal rv place - they only have a few spaces for travellers.  I picked up the map this morning and it was damp and limp - too much humidity.     We are on our way to Erin as our final destination today.  This is what we saw this morning.

Wiarton - pop. 2500 - small immaculate town where Wiarton Willie lives.  We went to see Willie but he was not out today, he must have been sleeping.  We walked through the park in the waterfront and met a gellow building a fence in the park.  I inquired about the waterfront and asked what the name of the bay was - Colpoys Bay in Gergian Bay.  It was misty so we didn't get to see the three small islands just out of the bay.  The fellow has been retired for 8 years and he volunteers on the beautification committee for the town.  He told us a lot about the area.  The Bruce Trail goes all the way down the peninsula to the falls, some 700 Kms.  He said that the weather is usually overcast in the winter time because the Great Lakes make the weather, but this past winter the weather was so cold the lakes froze over and the skies were sunny and bright.  Unusual for the area.  Here are some pictures from our Wiarton visit today.

This is the harbour at Wiarton.

The harbour.

All the houses between Wiarton and Owen Sound are nicely landscaped and very tidy.  Most are made of small red brick and are fairly square and tall.  The yards are immaculate - Dan says "do you notice what is missing here?" I said no - what.  Dandelions - there are no dandelions!! Well I guess he would notice that as he declared war on the dandelions at home, but I think they won.  The roads here are in excellent shape- the best we have travelled yet.

Owen Sound - pop. 22,000 - just as pristine as the rest of the peninsula.  This is a sample of what the buildings look like downtown.

Wind turbines surround us as we head south on Hwy 10 -  first we have seen since Halkirk, AB.
Fuel - our fuel stop at Flesherton with prices of $137.9 - they are going down.  Omg - next town the price is $134.9 - oh well as Ralph said the last place had the best fuel!  Ha, ha, he was a funny guy.

Erin is just 13 km out of Caledon and we are almost there! We arrive and get out the GPS to find the Cemetary.  It used to be called McMillan Cemetary but in 1980 was renamed the Erin Pioneer Cemetary.  We looked around and it needs some work on the headstones but I am not sure who will do that.  Almost half the Cemetary is our relatives, so hmmm.  Will have to tal to our family genealogist to see what we should do, if anything.

We looked for a Museum, we asked Betty (our GPS) and we went round in circles and she took us back to the Cemetary.  So I put the info in my phone and the same thing - back to the Cemetary.  We stopped and asked two teens, but they said there wasn't one here.  So one last shot we went to an auto parts store and they said there wasn't a museum either.  So next we look for a campsite nearby and there are not any - so off we go following the gps on my phone.  It seems like we are going in the wrong direction, but finally we find the campsite- but it is a resort and they want $57 for the night!!!! Well I said  why is it so expensive - she said because of our facilities - we are a destination.  Really I said!  No discounts for seniors? No, so off we went to figure something else out,
.  We decide to head to Guelph - surely there will be something on the way.  Well we get turned around and once again we are backtracking, omg we are almost back at Erin! Finally we get headed in the right direction find Guelph and a Walmart and that us where we stop - we just hope they don't ask us to leave - there isn't another rv in sight.  Oh well if they do we will make our way down the road.  And to all a good night!
