Day 66 -Tuesday, August 5 - So Long Prince Edward Island

Ring, ring, ring the alarm is going off.  It's 6 am and time to get up and get organized for our trip west into New Brunswick.  So long  PEI, the gentle island, it was nice to visit you.

Happy Birthday to our good friend Robin - today is his birthday!  Will have to call him tonight.

We are only a few minutes from the Confederation Bridge and Dan wants to get on the road!  The campsite emptied out last night, only a few campers left.

At the toll booth (looks familiar to me) we pull up and pay our dues - $60 to cross the almost 14 km bridge.

We think they should take some of the revenues from the tolls and use it repair the road.

Nothing but water on both sides of the bridge, and bridge is a like the eveready battery - it just keeps going and going and going!  There are many stop lights along the bridge and some spots that have emergency telephones.  We think the stop lights are in case of an accident or emergency they can be used to stop traffic.  Finally we see some land and we are entering New Brunswick.  Yeah.

Now we are taking the scenic route to Shediac.  But the road is awful, no shoulders, broken pavement and top speed about 50 kmh.  We decide that when we get to Shediac we are taking Route 11 to Miramichi, we are not going to beat up the motorhome on that road.  Besides some of the route goes along the coast anyway.

These are some pics from the scenic route.

We stopped in Shediac for a timmies coffee and gas was only $1.27 so we filled up, that was a deal compared to PEI at $1.34.

We are now headed to Miramichi on Route 11.  There certainly enough bridges on this route and lots of scenery too.  Glad that we came this way.  As we enter the town the bridge over the Miramichi River has some construction going on - the bridge is quite high.

We went into Walmart to get a few things and found out that the fish store I wanted was on the other side of the bridge.  So we will have to get back in line to cross the bridge again.  Just as we are unhooking the Geo a biker cones up and asks if we are going to be here a few minutes as he wants to go into Walmart to grab something to eat.  Sorry but we are on our way downtown.  Strange that he needed someone to look after his bike.  What did he have in those saddlebags? Contraband, bundles of cash or diamonds? Shoot we should have stayed to find out, mmm it's a mystery.

Down to Chatham we went to find Water Street and Mac's Fish Market.  This is quite an Irish Settlement - they even have an Irish Festival in July.

It's Tuesday and the sign on the door says it's Seniors Day!  Yeah finally a seniors discount.  Not too many of those on this trip.  Most museums and attractions, and campgrounds don't have any incentives for seniors.  Today must be my lucky day.  I got some Atlantic Salmon - the Miramichi River is famous for its Atlantic Salmon.  Also got a few other things, but the salmon was the main reason for the trip.  Gidget is, as always, an attraction with adults and children alike when we walk down the streets.  She is such a great traveller, sometimes Dan looks over to make sure she is still here as she is so quiet.  Now back across the bridge to get the products into the freezer.  A bite of lunch at a pizza place and north on Route 8 to Bathurst.  Turned out to be a beautiful day for travelling.

One lonely deer on the side of the road and then, omg! a big moose.  The moose was stuck in the wildlife fence but managed to get out just as we got to up to him. Whew!  Thought we might have fresh moose meat for dinner, ha!

We plan to stop at Campbellton for the night - it is the most northwest town in New Brunswick.  Lots of climbing on this route, so when we come to a passing lane all the cars take their turn roaring past us.  They must just love following us crazy Canucks!

Wow the view is amazing - as we round a corner what do we see?  Mountains - the Appalachians, beautiful.

This is the town of Campbellton, New Brunswick - our stop for the night.  Walmart here we come.

Our travels today took us along the Acadian Coast - this area is definitely a French speaking area.   Very beautiful scenery, happy people and very welcoming.  Tomorrow we leave New Brunswick and head into Quebec.
