Day 71 - Sunday, August 10 - Richard Lake

Early morning again - it is supposed to be a hot one again today.

Yesterday we found that, although Ottawa is a great place, being the Capital and all, it was a bit stiff.  The people were not as friendly, the service was okay and it was too busy.  I guess we just liked Montreal better. Maybe it was the time of year, people are getting tired of tourists.  Anyway it would be nice to go back someday and visit some of the sights we didn't get to see.

Wow!  Gas this morning is $1.276 so we topped up, you never know what the prices are at the next town, in fact Gas Buddy is not always right.  Last night fuel here was $1.299 - big difference.  We have now travelled 9,693 km, with quite a few thousand to go.

Driving on Hwy 17 there are all kinds of groves of trees bordering the highway - willows, maples, poplars and it is very scenic.  Just about 75 Kms from Ottawa heading to North Bay I noticed that some of the leaves are starting to change color aleady.  The odd red, orange or yellow leaves pop out of the green.

There is also lots of construction and the road is not in very good shape with the exception of the newly paved sections.

We followed the Ottawa River along until we came to Mattawa.  At North Bay we followed Lake Nipissing - it is a very large lake, but we notice there was a lot of haze from this point on.  Must be some fires burning in the north.  Lots of Sunday fishing going on today.

At North Bay we stopped for bread, milk and wine.  North Bay is the size of Kamloops with a population of 56,000.  I wore out my runners so we went to Sears to see if I could find some.  I scored I got a real nice pair of Nike's at 25% off and Dan got a nice pair of leather sandals at about 60% off so we both are now totally shod.

This was our deciding town - do we go north on Hwy 11, the truckers route, or do we stay south on Hwy 17, the scenic route?  Well the price of gas, according to Gas Buddy, is at least 10 cents a litre more on the northern and the distance between services at some points is at least 2.5 hours regular driving time, maybe not for us as Dan does not go over 90 kmh.  So we are taking Hwy 17.

Then on the road to Sudbury - our stop for the night.  We went through Sturgeon Falls and stopped for a bite and there is a Fiddle Fest going on all week, with step dancing and contests as well.  The rec centre and at least two ball fields full of Mohos and trailer units. Gonna be some kind of week in Sturgeon Falls!

Some scenery pics - very pretty around here.

The further west we go the more farming is evident.  Smells of fresh cut hay, flowers and greenery fill the air.  It looks like a lot of the corn crops are ready too.

And just as I am thinking that we might be able to get some fresh corn for dinner - ahead is a Farmers Market.  Oh my goodness they have fresh Ontario garlic, peaches and cream corn, peppers and all sorts of produce.  So we are having corn tonight!

We made it - Dan drove 485.2 Kms today, and here we are camped on Richard Lake at Carol's Campsite.  Reasonable too - only $35 including tax.  This is more a seasonal campsite and there are some nice summer homes here.  It is both a fishing lake and a recreational lake.  There is a small beach here.  Someday might like to have something like this where you can spend the summer fishing everyday.

Above is one is one of the seasonal units - nicely done.  The picture below is of Richard Lake here.

Time to cook the corn, mmm!
