Day 32 - Wednesday, July 2 On The Road Again

It is 7:00 am and already it is 19 degrees!  The prediction is for a humidex of 40 degrees or more today.  Yesterday was bad enough - I am sure I will melt!  Maybe it won't be so hot in Saint John for the next few days.

Fuel  in Fredericton is $1.29 - wow time to top up both the Geo and the Moho.  The local gas stations are called Irving and seem to always have the best prices.

Off we go headed for Saint John.  We travelled the River Valley Scenic Route, indicated by a Fiddlehead sign on Hwy 102 from Fredericton to Saint John.  The road meanders through little towns and villages, alongside lakes, streams and hayfields.  We saw the first horse we have seen in a long while, lots of cattle here though, dairy and beef.  The road is good in places but in other places it is rough with the pavement edge falling into the shoulder.  Nice drive though.

We pass some local strawberry places but are not able to stop.  The next one I want to stop to get strawberries.  In Greenwich we see a roadside store selling everything from plants to home baked goods and they have fresh picked local strawberries.  So we stop and get strawberries and Ice cream!  The ice cream was a treat.  The ladies at the store were very friendly but also very worried about Tropical Storm Arthur headed this way on the weekend.  There is a George Canyon concert at the church in Browns Flats, part of his Believe Tour, on Saturday, plus garage sales and a wedding that might be affected by the storm.  We are planning to take the ferry to Digby Nova Scotia on Saturday - that might not happen - we will have to keep an eye on the weather.

Just entering Grand Bay we stop at the bridge for a break.  The pIctures below are of Long Reach flowing into Grand Bay.  Very quaint little town, nicely landscaped, but the road is not very good, certainly not Grand!  Hwy 177 to Saint John is a liitle bit better, but if the province of New Brunswick is encouraging people to take the scenic routes they should fix the roads a bit better.

As we approach the turnoff to Saint John we made an oops and are heading west on Hwy 1 instead of east - wrong turn at the junction, hmm well we will see more area before we get to the campsite.  As we are heading west looking for an exit there is construction going on.  They are grinding out a swath of about 2 feet in the centre of the two lane and repaving and remarking, hmmm that seems weird but maybe only the centre portion failed? Different!

Well we finally get headed in the right direction and make our way through the city, not without incident, to our campsite at Rockwood Park Campground. As we approached the gates to register this family was strolling across the roadway.

This Is a campsite operated by volunteers of the Saint John Horticultural Assoc.  The fellow we had check us in was a character.  He told Dan it took him 45 years to learn that "a happy wife means a happy life" !  Just in case he didn't know that.

The weather here is exact opposite of that in Fredericton - it's overcast / foggy and 19 degrees, so I won't melt that's for sure; in fact I had to redress when we got here. We won't need any air conditioning tonight either.  That will make Gidget happy, she is not enjoying the heat at all.  I think she is starting to fail a bit, she doesn't seem to hear as well and she stumbled on the stairs more than once, so now I will have to make sure I pick her up coming into the Moho.  It's sad to see.

We got directions and went to the Marketpkace here to get some seafood for dinner.  Wow they have one similar to the one at the Quay in North.Vancouver or Granville Island.  Pretty neat place.

So back to the Moho to get ready to cook our prizes for dinner.  A few scallops and some lobster meat with a green salad and some garlic bread, topped off with a glass of white wine from a winery at Niagara on the Lake and we are set for the evening.  Cheers!
