Day 37 - Monday, July 7 - Avondale Sky Winery

Well we are hoping for a better day of travel today.  We don't want to get lost again today.  Our biggest problem is that we want to travel the scenic routes or back roads and the gps or Siri usually gives you the directions for the major routes.   We set out from our camp and our first stop was called Masstown.  Apparently there is a market there with a bakery and Dan is looking forward to a big, juicy, yummy cinnamon roll.  So we will see if we can find him one.  There is also a Lighthouse there that was turned into a fresh fish market and also houses a very good restaurant we were told by the lady at the info centre.  It is a large complex that has everything from souvenirs, locally made products, bakery, deli, grocery store and an ice cream store.  Unfortunately the cinnamon rolls are not ready yet and won't be until lunch time - poor Dan he was so looking forward to a treat!  We did pick up a few food items and then headed on our way in the direction of Hall's Harbour, not sure if we will make it there today.

On our back road route we go through each little town or village - some by the ocean and others inland.  This is very rural and a huge farming area - we are on the north side of Nova Scotia in the Annapolis Valley and the Bay of Fundy.

This is a glimpse of the farmland around this area.

We entered a little town called Minasville and there is a very well kept chapel and Cemetary there.

Moose Brook Chapel in Minasville.
As we drive further west we stop for a little break right by the bay at Cheverie.

As you can see Gidget is telling me the tide is way out there!  And across the road are lush green fields.

As Dan says anywhere that has such lush green fields must get a lot of rain.  We are on our way to find a winery that we see on the map.  Just before the winery we see the Avondale United Church - with two doors again.  Although the picture does not show it - it needs some TLC.

And right across the road is the winery.

This is a neat story.  St. Mathews Church from Walton, built in 1844, was going to be destroyed as there were only 4 parishioners left of the original congregation.  So the owners of the future winery purchased it and moved it 42 kilometres by ferry and by road to the present location on Avondale Cross Road in Newport Landing, Nova Scotia.

The outside and the wine tasting room inside is amazing.

And not only is the winery unique - the wines are great too.  The owners are very friendly and the wine tasting is complimentary.

It's too late in the day to head too far so we end up in a little town called Middleton - claiming to be the heart of the Valley.  The couple that owns the Queen Motel and RV are native Nova Scotians.  They used to run an RV Site at Peggy's Cove but they sold and moved to Vancouver.  Unfortunately things were too pricey there so they returned and settled here.  Nice fellow and clean place they run.  So we signed up for two nights as we are going to go to Hall's Harbour tomorrow.  Time to settle in for the evening.  Another interesting day meeting interesting people.
