Day 33 - Thursday, July 3 - Fundy Coastal Drive, St. Stephen

We got up this morning and it is still foggy - kind of eerie!   The news this morning talked about Saint John being hit with 50 or more mm of rain and high winds as a result of Hurricane Arthur.  Today we are heading out the Fundy Coastal Drive to St. Stephens and we will worry about tomorrow later.  This is what the weather is like here in Saint John.

Kind of spooky - as you can see there are no campers beside us - the campground is not very busy at all.

Off we go following the Fundy Coastal Drive on our way to St. Stephen.   Meandering through small towns in and out of the coastline we come across an old wharf.

The lobster traps are lined up just waiting for the tide to come in we think.

As you can see it is still foggy and the tide is way out.

We carry on and in Chance Harbour we ran across this Baptist Church.  As we pull up so I can take a picture a van pulls up.  The fellow gets out and asks if we are lost.  I said no I just like old churches and especially this one.  It has two doors - do you know why there are two doors?  He says no and I never even noticed there were two doors - we only ever use one.  Well I said when I was in Scotland, at Portnehaven on the Isle of Islay there was a church there, very old, with two doors as well.  I wondered then if the two doors were one for entering and one for exiting - or one for men and one for women and children.  That's a question I will have to research I guess.  It is a very nice church I tell him and he says yes we have three churches in the area that we hop back and forth from and they all need maintenance and that keeps us very busy.  He was very interesting and invited me into the church - well kept and very peaceful.

Our next stop is Lepreau where we find a covered bridge that was erected in 1910 over Mill Pond.

Next stop was Lepreau Falls.  These falls are three freshwater lakes flowing together to meet the saltwater of the Bay of Fundy.  This location was important back in the days of prohibition as the smugglers used this isolated spot below the falls to land liquor without being seen.  The bootleggers were paid top dollar for the liquor from New Brunswick delivered to Maine, USA.

Lepreau Falls.

This bridge we found interesting - it had stone railings and the Lepreau River ran underneath.  Lepreau was an interesting place for sure.

We made it to St. Stephen and the weather is beautiful!!!  The sun is shining, it is actually hot and it feels like we are in another world.  We stop at the park and decide we should find some takeout for lunch, give Gidget some water and sit and enjoy!  I had my first lobster roll and it was so delicious, fresh and yummy!  St. Stephen is called the Chocolate Capital of Canada.  They have the Ganong Chocolate factory there, so of course we needed to buy some chocolate.  It was good.  St. Stephen is right next door to Calais, Maine.

The Lighthouse at the park in St. Stephen.

Gidget and I sitting at the Tourist Info which is an old railway station after lunch.
Time to head back and visit St. Andrews by the sea.  It is just as beautiful as St. Stephen.  A little quaint town with some very interesting store fronts.

Beautiful beaches, and very busy.  There is a Waterfront RV Resort that was very full - benches set up all along the bay for all.

Next we come across a park with a stone Celtic Cross dedicated to the Irish Canadians that served to protect the country.

Our next stop is St. George and what a cute little hamlet, very little.  Here we stopped at the Wild Blueberry store.  There seems to be quite a market along this coast for wild blueberries and all products are locally made.  We stopped earlier at a stand and bought a jar of blueberry jam, the strawberry I brought with us is almost gone.  At this shop I bought some blueberry tea and a jar of blueberry salsa.  They had samples out and they were delicious so I thought we needed more treats to top off our day.

We are almost back at Saint John and our adventure has come to an end for another day.  Tomorrow is decision day - what do we do? Good Night from Rockwood Park.
