Day 46 - Wednesday, July 16 - New Glasgow

The wind just howled all night.  Dan had to check our slide-out awnings this morning to make sure they were still in tact.  Our destination today - New Glasgow.  Our camp is about 25 Kms from the town, so we head out looking for a tourist info centre to find out the highlights of the town.  Hmm, none to be found.  We are looking at a map of the area and a young fellow asks if we are lost.  He tells us that there are two info centres - one for Pictou County before New Glasgow and one in the Museum of Industry.  The Musuem is the closest one so we head back there.

This is what is left of the Cornish Pump House that's was located at the coal mine site.  The invention of the Cornish  pump allowed the mine shafts to be excavated to a depth of 1000 ft - the deepest at that time.  The technology came from Britain and was used in Cornwall.  A 3 Storey stone house protected the 260 horsepower steam engine.  In 1880 the Foord and Cage Pits were flooded with water after a devastating explosion occurred in the East River causing underground fires.  The Cornish Pump worked for 4 years after that to de-water the mines.  But to no avail the pumps could not get rid of the water and the pits were abandoned in 1892.  Imagine the technology that the pioneers had!

The steam engine was also on display.

We passed under the bridge and entered into the town of New Glasgow.

We drove into New Glasgow and went down the one way street in the heart of the city.

Town Hall.

Lots of older buildings line the downtown streets.

I told Dan we should try out this pub - but it seems it is up for sale.

So instead we went to the A&W for a drink and fries!  They have this pickup on display - cool!

So back to camp we head after a bit of shopping and cruising around.  We took a different exit back to camp and there were a lot of small equine operations on the route.  Interesting!  Nice country and we enjoyed our day.
